The product: Marcelle Waterproof Lip Definition Crayon

Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons are strikingly similar to their Waterproof Eyeliners (yet to be reviewed; I have them swatched and photographed, but haven’t gotten around to it yet). Both feature a rather “sticky” texture, which tugs at the skin as the pencils are applied, but

I’ve just gone and checked the ingredients, and guess what? Marcelle’s Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons aren’t just similar to their Waterproof Eyeliners – they feature the exact same formula, save for the colourants. Turns out, this isn’t all that uncommon in waterproof pencils, either: I’ve only checked two or three other lines so far, but Make Up For Ever is an example of another brand who does it. (Their Aqua Eyes and Aqua Lip liners, that is.)

Well, then! You learn something new every day, don’t you? ;)

Anyhow, back to the product at hand. These lip pencils, like the eye pencils, feature a smooth-but-sticky texture, by which I mean: the product does go on smoothly and without any grittiness or texture inconsistencies, but needs a bit of pressure to get the line going. It’s a heavy pencil, more crayon than buttery khol, and (I warn you now!) might tug or skip a bit.

Where these run into problems with application, though, they make up for it in wear time. They remind me of the GOSH Velvet Touch pencils, if that helps give you a standpoint for texture – similar to UD 24/7 or MUFE Aqua liners, but less smudgy and with better wear time. Once these are on, they’re on.

At $10.50 per pencil, these are a good buy if you’re looking for a really long-wearing lip liner. I do tend to reach for my 2 in 1 Retractable Plumping Lipliners when I’m going for a Marcelle pencil, though; they may not wear as long, but I find them easier to apply. (Plus, I’m a sucker for a creamy matte lip, and the 2 in 1 pencils give a softer effect if used as a lip colour rather than just a liner.)

The only thing I’m not crazy about with regards to the Waterproof Lip Definition Crayons is the colour selection – Marcelle’s products tend to run a little too warm/orange for my colouring, so I don’t get as much wear out of these as I’d like. If you can rock a warm lipcolour, then give the se a go!

Newbie beauty brand Jing Ai has gotten started with a bang—they have a table set up at Henri Bendel this week so that they can introduce new customers to their products. The line, which will be at Bendel's through this Sunday, is all-natural, gluten free, and made from champagne grapes and wild roses.

The roses are a key element of the brand, whose name means "Pure Love" in Mandarin: founder Donna Cristino was inspired by her late grandmother, Rose, and every product in the lineup—including lip pencils, bronzers, and a mascara—is named after a variety of the flower. (No, there really is a rose named "Eye Paint.")

Call it the Rooney Mara Effect. One of my favorite dare-it trends for Fall 2012 is the deep, blood red lip color. While pink is safe, red is bold, a deep rich blood red is absolutely daring. Bordering on goth, it’s important to pair your pout with a little bronzer or blush so it doesn’t wash you out but stick to a bare face to keep your lips center stage.

This isn’t for the faint of heart, this isn’t for date night. This black-red is pure fashion. MAC’s artist at the Christian Siriano show layered pencil and lipstick to create a bat-like effect to the lips. And they are stunning. When you look at the images close up it can be jarring, but once paired with high collars or leather the look is nothing but perfection…

MAC used Lip Pencil in Nightmoth under Lipstick in Media with a touch of clear gloss. For those of us who love the look but want to tone it down a bit, try a stain or gloss in this burgundy shade.

A bit darker than I'd generally like to wear...but with NYX swatches, one can just never really tell. I can wear this if I apply lightly, blot, AND go over it with a pink gloss or balm. The color payoff is very good, I only went over my lips twice (because once doesn't get the entire lip) to get the color in the photo below. It does line well, but I also wonder if part of that isn't because the contrast between my skintone and this lip color is so strong! I don't like how the lip color doesn't seem to really adhere to the very center of my lower lip - the portion that's most often in contact with my bottom teeth, or tongue. Keep in mind, this photo was taken less than a minute after application - so there wasn't really much time for the lip color to come off. It never really went on! I have tried on and worn darker shades before, and haven't had this adhesion-problem to this extent, so it could be something in the formula of NYX's lip pencils.

Last night we all put down the midterm study guides and instead opted to watch the 2012 Oscars. While we could have been guessing which actor/actress would take home an award, we here at VIM seemed to be more obsessed with the fashion and beauty choices of the night.
