  • Manufacturer: NYX Cosmetics
  • Availability: permanent
  • Availability: drugstores and midrange "all-in-one" stores (Ulta, CVS, Rite-Aid, Fred Meyer, et cetera) also through various etailers (ie, cherryculture.com, beautyjoint.com)
  • Contains: 25 eye pencils
  • Cost/Amount: $4.50 for .14 ounces / 4 grams
  • Would you purchase again: yes

As with most NYX collections, there's a little bit of confusion. The color names don't match up from site to site. The online swatches may or may not be acdurate representations of the colors themselves. And NYX's own web site says that there are 30 colors available...but they only list 25. (Maybe someone was having a Bad Math Day. Or they just copied boilerplate text from another page and didn't bother to fact-check it.) Since NYX and its various partners (and the etailers) don't always use the same names...I'm including the numbers. At the time of this review, Narcisse and Vixen seem to have been discontinued...but I'm including them here, in case others go searching for these. (And if you're interested, they're still apparently available from Beauty Joint.)

  • Almond (730) — light tan shimmer
  • Bronze (705) —
  • Burgundy (715) — medium-deep wine-red creme
  • Chaos (724) — hot pink creme
  • Chestnut (729) — gilded pink-tan shimmer
  • Coffee (717) — red-brown creme
  • Copper Pink (713) — copper shimmer
  • Deep Red (709) — medium-dark neutral red creme
  • Hazelnut (725) — medium neutral brown shimmer
  • Hera (722) — medium soft fuchsia shimmer
  • Honey (Nectar) (720) — coral-salmon shimmer
  • Hot Red (704) — bright red creme
  • Ice (726) —
  • Iced Coffee (711) — medium pink-tan shimmer
  • Iced Mocha (708) — medium gold-brown shimmer
  • Iris (728) — light lilac-pink shimmer
  • Maroon (718) —
  • Narcisse (723) — deep cool wine-red creme
  • Pecan (719) — pinked taupe-tan creme
  • Pink Brown (716) — soft coral-pink shimmer
  • Pink Nude (703) — bright pale pink shimmer
  • Plush Red (712) — bright red creme
  • Rose Brown (701) — warm light brown shimmer
  • Sable Bronze (714) —
  • Soft Fuchsia (721) — pinked nude creme
  • Vanilla Ice (727) —
  • Vixen (702) — "black honey" red creme

Overall, these have similar advantages / disadvantages as the Jumbo Eye Pencils. They're very easily portable, they line or provide fuller coverage, and (especially when buying from the etailers) they're somewhat inexpensive. They're also not the best in terms of color adhesion or longevity. They do require sharpening, which bother some folks (like myself) because it wastes product...but I found a video demonstrating how to repot the jumbo lip and eye pencils! It does require holding a hair dryer on them for a really long time to essentially melt the product out of the pencil-tube, and I'm wondering if I couldn't jumpstart the process in the microwave; but it's a way to make sure that you get to use all the product that you're paying for. (Here's another video on repotting the NYX jumbo pencils using a method that requires a bit of digging about, but no heat.)

Thank you for this VERY useful post. I haven’t waded into the waters of NYX lip pencils, but based on your info., and my own positive experience with the jumbo eye pencils, I think that I will. The two video links were very nice of you to share. BTW, some of us have a Bad Math Day every day of our lives, so that comment made me chuckle.

If you’re looking for some to try out, I highly suggest Honey, Soft Fuchsia, or Pink Brown. Those are in the “eminently wearable” or “office appropriate” zones. Chaos and Hera are a bit brighter/bolder, and Hot Red is the “pinup red” shade! I am very glad I found the repotting videos, though. I was agonizing over how to sharpen my Hot Pink eyeshadow pencils without losing too much product - especially now that the color’s apparently been discontinued!
